The faults Vito owners see most
- AdBlue / SCR - warning lights and "starts remaining" countdowns: Mercedes Vito AdBlue fault.
- DPF - blockages from short-journey use: clean vs replace.
- EGR - sooting and flow faults, shared with the Sprinter (OM651/OM654): the EGR valve guide.
- Turbo / boost - limp mode from under- or over-boost.
- Gearbox / clutch - niggles on higher-mileage examples.
The Vito shares most of its engine and emissions hardware with the Sprinter, so the faults - and the diagnostic approach - are largely the same. If you've read our Sprinter guides, you already know the cast of characters.
W447 vs W639
The current Vito is the W447 (2014 on); the older shape is the W639. Engine and emissions hardware overlap heavily with the Sprinter (OM651/OM654), which is exactly why our Sprinter content applies so cleanly to the Vito - and why a Mercedes van specialist is the right call over a general garage.
Buying a used Vito?
A Pre-Purchase Digital Health Check reads every module for hidden or recently cleared faults - especially around AdBlue and DPF, where a suspiciously clean dash can hide an expensive problem the seller would rather you didn't find.
As a platform the Vito is solid. The costs come from neglected emissions faults left to escalate - not from the van itself. Catch them early and it's an affordable workhorse.
